Oi

Find someone nearby. Trust them. Get it done.

Oi is a local marketplace owned by the people who use it. Payment is held safely until the job's done, ratings can't be bought, disputes are settled by neighbours, and the books are open to everyone.

Two minutes: message a local, hire them, finish the job, leave a rating.

A working demo for the Oi crowdfunding campaign. Everything runs on a real database; nothing takes real money. What's real and what isn't

How it works

  1. Find someone. See who's nearby, what they charge and how real people rated them.
  2. Hire them. The price is locked in and held the moment you agree, so it can't change halfway.
  3. Mark it done. They're paid automatically. If something's wrong, a resolver steps in before anything is released.
  4. Rate each other. Both sides, permanently and publicly. That's what makes the next person's choice easy.

Why it's different

The open ledger

Meet the founder

Paul in his four-wheel drive, bogged in the mud in the Tasmanian bush

I'm a carpenter, not a programmer — and dyslexic, for what it's worth. I saw a gap a long time ago: a way regular people could help each other out and actually get something fair back for it, without a platform taking most of the value in the middle. I sketched this idea out fourteen years ago. I couldn't build it then — the technology just wasn't there yet. It is now, so I'm finally having a go.

The honest details

Is this real?

It's a demonstration, and it stays one until the real thing is properly built. Everything marked "Built" below runs on this real database and works as described, but this build is a working prototype, not a production-secure product handling real money. The people you meet in the demo village are demo members, clearly labelled, and cOIns have no cash value.

The campaign funds a professional team to build the real, secure version: security hardening, a completed legal and compliance review, and a formal build assessment by people who do this for a living. Honest estimate, not a promise: even once funded, that's realistically another 6–12 months of paid, professional work before a real-money version of Oi can launch anywhere.

What's built, what's simulated, what's planned

"Built" means a genuine working system with a real database behind it, not a mockup. "Simulated" means fully built but switched off until Oi runs on real money. "Planned" hasn't been started.

From demo to launch
  1. A working interactive prototype. Everything in the "Built" rows, tested against a real database, not a design mockup.
  2. This crowdfunding campaign. Funds security hardening, real-money payment integration, legal and accessibility review, and production infrastructure.
  3. Real-money integration. A payment processor, formal identity verification, and a completed legal/compliance review.
  4. A real launch, open to everyone. Anyone, anywhere can join from day one. Early campaigns focus on a few areas first, so the first members find each other quickly.

Even once funded, expect roughly 6–12 months of professional security, legal and compliance work before a real-money version of Oi can launch anywhere. This describes the steps, not a fixed date.

Where the money goes

The $1,000,000 goal covers the gap between this working demo and a real, safe launch: roughly two years of professional work. Here's where it goes.

WhatAmount (AUD)
A professional development team building the production version$410,000
Security hardening and an independent security audit$150,000
Founder's salary, two years (see below)$170,000
Legal, compliance and accessibility review$90,000
Payment processor and identity verification set-up$60,000
Hosting and production infrastructure, two years$40,000
Crowdfunding platform and card fees (estimate)$80,000
Total$1,000,000

Every dollar spent will show up in the same open books as the platform's fees.

It includes a founder's salary, under the same open-books rule as everything else. Paul working on Oi full-time is priced at $85,000 AUD/year, before tax, the going rate for a highly skilled carpenter/joiner in Tasmania, not a founder or CEO rate. Sourced, not picked to look modest: Tasmanian qualified-carpenter salary data and the national construction-role average.

What the fee model looks like at real scale

The live numbers above are genuine but tiny. Here's the same fee model run against a modest, realistic scenario: 70 active members, 200 transactions (illustrative assumptions, not live data), at $99.35 average transaction value, the real average of the completed test jobs on the platform so far.

$19,870gross transaction volume
$2,384platform fee at the base 12% rate

Founding members and active resolvers pay less than the 12% base rate, so real fee revenue at this scale would land somewhat below this figure. It's the ceiling, not a promise.

Frequently asked

What is Oi, in one line? A community-owned marketplace for finding help and offering skills, built so the value it creates stays with the people who use it, not a distant shareholder.

What's a cOIn? A demonstration unit with no cash value, used throughout this build. See "What are cOIns?" wherever you see a balance.

What do backers get? A lifetime discount on the platform fee, sized to the tier (see the backer tiers above). Separately, everyone who completed setup during the early launch period carries the Founding Member badge and a one-off 500-cOIn bonus; the badge itself doesn't change the fee.

What happens if the goal isn't reached? Nobody is charged. The campaign is all-or-nothing: if it doesn't reach $1,000,000, every pledge is cancelled. Without the money there's no security review, no identity checks and no payment processor, and Oi won't run a real marketplace without those. This site stays up in a stripped-back form so people can still see what was built, but it never becomes a live marketplace.

When does Oi actually launch? No date is set. Even once funded, a real launch needs a professional team's security hardening, a completed legal/compliance review, and a formal build assessment, realistically another 6–12 months of paid work. See "From demo to launch" above.

Back the build

Backing Oi early earns a lifetime discount on the platform fee (see the backer tiers above). Pledging happens only on Indiegogo; this site never takes payment.

Oi facilitates connections between members. It's a facilitator, not a guarantor. It doesn't stand between you and the laws of the country you're in, and it doesn't replace them.
